Information for Workpiece Evaluation

What Information Is Required for a CNC Machining Evaluation?

A Complete Guide to Essential Information for Workpiece Evaluation

When a customer has a specific workpiece and wants to confirm machining feasibility, machine model suitability, production efficiency, or further plan tooling, fixtures, and trial machining, the relevant information can be provided according to the purpose of the evaluation.

For a general preliminary evaluation, the core information is the workpiece drawing, blank drawing, and material information. Production volume, existing machining conditions, specified machine model, and information on tooling, fixtures, and trial machining can then be supplemented depending on the project requirements.

For a preliminary evaluation, the following information is usually required: workpiece drawing + blank drawing + material information.

1. Workpiece Drawing and Areas to Be Machined

Provide a 2D engineering drawing or PDF drawing. If a 3D file is already available, it can also be provided. Information such as dimensional tolerances, geometric tolerances, surface roughness, and datums on the drawing can all be used as the basis for the machining evaluation.

If only part of the machining area needs to be evaluated, mark the area to be machined directly on the drawing to avoid any misunderstanding about the machining scope.

2. Blank Dimensions, Shape, and Pre-Machining Condition

Provide a 2D engineering drawing or PDF drawing of the blank. If a 3D file is available, it can also be provided. The drawing should indicate the blank's length, width, and height, or outside diameter and length, to confirm the actual machining range, machining allowance, and clamping space.

At the preliminary evaluation stage, if a complete blank drawing is not yet available, the main dimensions and photos can be provided first. A physical sample can be provided later if needed for subsequent tooling and fixture planning or trial machining.

3. Workpiece Material and Material Condition

Provide the workpiece material grade. If the workpiece has been heat-treated, or if the drawing specifies a clear hardness requirement, also provide the hardness or heat-treatment condition.

4. Production Volume and Efficiency Requirements

Provide the estimated monthly and annual production volumes, and indicate whether automation is required.

5. Existing Machining Conditions and Improvement Requirements

For projects involving replacement of an existing machine, production capacity improvement, or process improvement, it is recommended to provide the current machine model, clamping method and number of setups, machining time, and any current issues related to accuracy, efficiency, chip evacuation, vibration, etc. This information helps the technical team understand the existing process and further evaluate possible improvements to the equipment and machining solution.

6. Tooling and Fixture Information

If the project includes tooling and fixture planning, the technical team will plan the configuration based on the workpiece and machining requirements. If existing tools or fixtures need to be reused, please also provide the relevant specifications and information. Whether the existing setup is suitable for the new equipment and machining requirements must still be confirmed through technical evaluation.

Quick Summary of Machining Evaluation Information

Data Item When to Provide Recommended Information to Provide
Workpiece drawing / areas to be machined Preliminary evaluation Workpiece 2D / PDF drawing; 3D file (if available);
Mark the machining scope
Blank dimensions / shape / pre-machining condition Preliminary evaluation Blank 2D / PDF drawing; 3D file (if available)
Workpiece material / material condition Preliminary evaluation Material grade, hardness or heat-treatment condition
Production volume / efficiency requirements When capacity or automation is involved Monthly and annual production volumes; whether automation is required
Existing machining conditions / improvement requirements Machine replacement, production capacity improvement, or process improvement Current machine model, machining time, on-site issues, or specified machine model
Tools / fixtures When the project includes related planning Information related to tools or fixtures

The purpose of a machining evaluation is to translate workpiece conditions and production requirements into a specific machining solution. Based on the workpiece drawing, blank, material, and production requirements, the technical team can conduct process analysis, plan suitable tools and machining conditions, estimate machining time, and determine the appropriate machine model, required number of machines, and required production capacity.

If you have a specific workpiece to evaluate for machining feasibility, machine selection, or production capacity, you can provide the workpiece drawing, blank information, material, and other available requirements. The FEELER technical team can then review your machining needs and help identify a suitable machine and machining solution.
